Now Applying: A Job Search Journey
Company mergers happen frequently in the business world but, what happens when that merger eliminates jobs? I had the pleasure of speaking to a gentleman named Sam about how he navigated through the difficulties of finding employment in today’s competitive workforce.
After working for fourteen years in a small business, downsizing eliminated Sam’s position. His previous role as a National Accounts Sales Manager helped him develop critical skills that would make him a valuable asset to any company. Equipped with all the skills he’d gained through the longevity of his career he began his job search. Although he knew it wouldn’t be an easy task, he felt confident. As an experienced worker, Sam looked for roles in which he would have lots of responsibility in a stable company which would reward his hard work with a satisfactory starting salary and commission based compensation.
Throughout his career he had networked and made many connections which he used when looking for new job opportunities. These connections lead to multiple interviews with about half a dozen companies. Sam received mixed feedback from the employers he met. He had the experience, work ethic, and skills needed to be a valuable addition to a company, and still no luck in landing a position.
After three months of looking for opportunities through his connections, Sam became discouraged and frustrated. Due to reaching many dead ends he decided to reach out to Greg, a recruiter at RaezerConnect. As a recruiter, Greg’s job is to bridge the gap between candidates and employers in order to fill open positions with talented employees. Sam describes his experience with a recruiter as being phenomenal. To begin the process, he spoke to Greg about his prior work experience and what he expected for a new position. Having this knowledge Greg then found Sam potential jobs that fit his personalized needs. After consulting about the options with Sam, Greg began to set up interviews and negotiate salaries. Six weeks after initially connecting with Greg, Sam had two amazing job offers; one of which he accepted. Sam says the position is a great fit and exactly what he was looking for.
Sam’s struggle to independently find a position in the workforce, is a recurring problem experienced by many skilled candidates. His advice to others actively looking is to not look for a job on their own. Reach out to a recruiter, build a relationship, and actively communicate your needs. Most importantly he says, “trust the process”!
