Working from home: The new normal

Making the transition into “working from home” can be quite stressful. Here are six quick tips to help you adjust:

  1. Start the day as you would if you were going into the office. Take a shower, get dressed as you would for work on a Friday, have breakfast. Keeping this routine will help you adapt to your new schedule.

  2. Work in a quiet room if possible, closed off from distractions. This is important so you have the ability to fully focus on your workload.

  3. Recreate your normal office setting. This can include things like your laptop, mouse, printer, or anything else you need to get your job done. Having everything conveniently around you will help with adapting to your new work environment.

  4. When you get to your workspace create a list of the tasks you know you want or need to complete that day. As you go on and complete set tasks, scratch them off your list. This will help you stay organized and mentally focused.

  5. Maintain your normal business hours. Sticking to these hours creates a balance between work and personal life. Try limiting the personal phone calls during business hours; if needed keep them brief.

  6. Implement more ways of communicating versus just email and text. Video conferencing and phone conversations help maintain connections. It’s always good to have some human “contact” throughout the day. Make sure you know how to use technology like Zoom or Skype when participating in virtual meetings. Test your microphone/ speaker and be aware of what is in your background.

It’s not easy transitioning your home into an office, if you find yourself burnt out, take a break. Make yourself a snack or read a couple pages of your favorite book. This will help you clear your mind and get back to the task feeling refreshed.
