Step one: The first thing a candidate should do after an interview is send a thank you email to the interviewer. This should be done later that day or the following morning. It is suggested to keep it short and sweet. You should…

  • Thank them for their time

  • Highlight your interest in the opportunity

  • Mention/ reiterate why you’re uniquely qualified and confident you can excel in the role

Lastly, before you send the thank you email make sure to thoroughly examine it for any spelling or grammar errors.

Step two (when applicable): Call your recruiter after to provide feedback about how your interview went. This helps them gauge your interest and best position you with the hiring manager/company when comparing notes and potential next steps.

Step three: Often times a hiring company will request additional information such as references or work samples. Make sure to get that to them in a timely manner. Depending on the involvement, 2-3 days is reasonable. By responding in an appropriate manner you reinforce your interest in the position and show you’re a responsible candidate.

Step four: If you don’t get the job (an offer), consider it good practice. It is important to not take it personally but to consider it a learning opportunity. The experience gained will help you better prepare for your next job interview. Respond back to the employer politely and maintain a positive attitude. Remember your next big opportunity is still out there!
